Puyi (Joey) Rao, born in Hangzhou, China, is majoring in Graphic Communication Design at Central Saint Martins.

Joey’s core strength is integrating visual language with social issues, connecting culture, values and public communication via visual systems to make communicative, critical designs. Joey is proficient in design software, layout, info visualization and mixed-media design, and possesses independent research and planning capabilities as well as team organization and collaboration skills.

·Explored how to establish an “underground” communication network based on trust and truth—called “the circuit”—in a future where misinformation and falsehoods are widespread.

·Took primary charge of publication production, calendar and newspaper creation, and collaborated with Emily to complete the preliminary work

·Integrated Exhibition Narrative Framework, visualized the "Persona-Room-World" pathway, and achieved both knowledge dissemination and cultural communication via curation and publication

·Referenced face reading and Cultural Semiotic, visualized the 24 Solar Terms and other symbols, produced calendars and newspapers, and shaped an Eastern symbolic design language

·Stored the clothing, food, shelter, and emotional attachments of 2025 UAL international students in a suitcase placed inside the school locker, to let 100-year-later students learn their life via Moodle messages.

·Designed transparent resin devices to hold pet items symbolizing emotional bonds, and created a publication and a transparent film with audio to document 2025 campus trends, environment and sounds

PIA JI: Research on Visual Language of Pet Brands Under the Symbiosis Concept, CSM

·Developed pet brand “PIA JI” under a cross-cultural narrative framework based on sociocultural research; analyzed identity perception differences in Sino-Western animal culture to design a visual identity system with educational and social issue-related functions

·Applied Symbolic Anthropomorphism in packaging and Participatory Storytelling to drive user brand narrative engagement, strengthening recognition

·Selected biodegradable materials and eco-friendly structural design to lower carbon footprint

·Established Visual Persuasion Mechanism; used "Fur-ever" wordplay and youth-focused visuals to position “pets as symbionts” in social cognition.

LET’S GO HOLI: Foldable Visual Publishing Experiment for Holi Festival, CSM

·Utilized Cultural Recontextualization in design to create an educational visual publication tailored for teenagers, and conveyed the openness and inclusivity of global festival culture through color-driven narrative.​

·Adopted Foldable Concertina Format and Dual-sided Narrative Device; illustrations employed Kati Szilágyi’s color blocks and visual metaphors to evoke a sense of “colours as blessings”
